Acclaimed London chamber choir Londinium presents a long tradition of joyous British choral music on its first tour to The Netherlands.
London chamber choir Londinium, which under its Musical Director Andrew Griffiths has established a particular reputation for adventurous programming of 20th- and 21st-century British a cappella repertoire, toured to The Netherlands for the first time in August 2022 with concerts in Amsterdam and Leiden of British choral music celebrating the uplifting power of song.
Londinium’s wide-ranging concert programme ‘Sing Joyfully’, named after William Byrd’s exuberant anthem of the same title, presents highlights from the choir’s extensive repertoire of British choral music, from Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Henry Purcell to Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams and contemporary composer Bernard Hughes.
The music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) has been a particular focus for the choir in 2022, the year of the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams’ birth. Londinium performed four of Vaughan Williams’ choral pieces in Amsterdam and Leiden, as well as music by his teachers Charles Wood and Charles Villiers Stanford, and his pupils Imogen Holst and Irish composer Ina Boyle, whose part-song ‘The Light’ner of the Stars’ were performed for the first time in The Netherlands.
